Peter Gregory Obi (born 19 July 1961, Onitsha) built a trading and distribution business, Next International, and chaired the board of Fidelity Bank before entering politics. He won the 2003 Anambra governorship at the tribunal, took office in March 2006, survived an impeachment and a Supreme Court tenure case, and served until March 2014. As governor he returned mission schools to the churches, took Anambra to first place in national examinations, and grew internally generated revenue from 4.6 to 8.7 billion naira. He holds the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger and a papal knighthood. He was the PDP's vice-presidential candidate in 2019 and the Labour Party's presidential candidate in 2023, winning Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory and ten other states with 6.1 million votes. In May 2026 he became the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
