Roots
Onitsha, a trading family, a father lost to the war, and a mother who rebuilt.
19 July 1961
Born in Onitsha
Peter Gregory Obi is born in Onitsha, the sixth of the children of Josephat and Agnes Obi, traders from Agulu in Anaocha who had settled in the market city before the war.
1968
His father dies during the war
Josephat Obi, who had built the Ideal Soul Super Market in Onitsha, dies in 1968 while Peter is a small boy. The civil war wipes out the family business. His mother Agnes rebuilds from nothing, opening a domestic training centre and the Nado restaurant on Modebe Avenue.
1973 to 1978
Christ the King College, Onitsha
After primary school he enters Christ the King College. He uses his school fees as trading capital before paying them, buys eggs from farms in Agbor and sells them near the school gate, and finishes his West African School Certificate in 1978.

1980 to 1984
Philosophy at Nsukka
He reads Philosophy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating in 1984. As an undergraduate he is already travelling to London to import goods and owns a Peugeot 504.
1987
First house, bought outright in London
He buys his first house in London without a mortgage and begins investing in the stock market, according to his long-time aide Valentine Obienyem.
1992
Marries Margaret Brownson Usen
He marries Margaret Brownson Usen. They have two children, Gabriella Nwamaka Frances and Gregory Peter Oseloka.
1996
Next International in London
Next International (UK) Limited is incorporated with Obi and his wife as directors. The Next companies import and distribute brands such as Heinz and Ovaltine across West Africa. “I was a big trader,” he says.

Boards, chairmanships and, at thirty-four, a bank.
Mid-1990s
Youngest chairman of Fidelity Bank
At 34 he becomes chairman of the board of Fidelity Bank, the youngest in its history. Before politics he sits on the boards of three banks and chairs eleven companies.
Governor
Three years in the courts to take the office, eight years in it, three times removed and three times restored.

Runs for governor on the APGA ticket
INEC declares Chris Ngige of the PDP the winner. Obi goes to the tribunal. It will take three years.
17 March 2006
Sworn in as Governor of Anambra
The Court of Appeal in Enugu upholds the 2005 tribunal ruling that the 2003 election was wrongly declared. Two days later he takes the oath of office.

Impeached at dawn
Lawmakers convene at about half past five in the morning under police guard and vote him out. Deputy Governor Virginia Etiaba becomes Nigeria’s first female state governor.

Reinstated by the Court of Appeal
The court rules the impeachment unconstitutional. Etiaba hands power back.

The Supreme Court fixes his tenure
Led by Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, the Supreme Court holds that a governor’s four years run from the day of the oath. Andy Uba, sworn in seventeen days earlier after an election Obi did not contest, is ordered to vacate. The ruling creates Nigeria’s off-cycle elections.

Schools go back to the missions
Eighteen secondary schools are handed back to the churches that founded them. In November 2011 the policy extends to 1,040 primary schools, with a six billion naira grant.

Re-elected
He wins a second term with 97,843 votes in a field of twenty-five, ahead of Chris Ngige and Chukwuma Soludo.

The Intafact brewery, a greenfield investment of more than a hundred million dollars, is commissioned. The state takes a stake of about two billion naira.

Eight years to the day after his oath, he leaves office. That morning the state’s traditional rulers name him Okwute, the Rock, of Igboland.

Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission
President Jonathan appoints him chairman of the SEC board. The appointment lapses when the new government dissolves all federal boards in July.

The Platform: cutting the cost of governance
His Independence Day speech at Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos travels far beyond the room. “Government house is not a restaurant,” he says, and Nigeria starts paying attention.

Running mate to Atiku Abubakar
Atiku Abubakar names him the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate. The ticket takes 11.26 million votes and seventeen states in February 2019.

Leaves the PDP for the Labour Party
Citing vote buying in the primaries, he walks away from the PDP and, six days later, wins the Labour Party ticket in Asaba. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed joins him in July. The people who follow call themselves Obidients.

The marches
Volunteer marches fill Makurdi, Calabar, Port Harcourt, Enugu and, on Independence Day, Lagos. Nobody is bussed in. “We are the structure,” the banners say.

Chatham House
In London he sets out a programme to move Nigeria from consumption to production. “The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership.”
25 February 2023
6.1 million votes, Lagos, the capital and ten more states
A party that had never won a state takes Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory and ten more states. INEC places him third with 6,101,533 votes.

A new party, a running mate, and an election on 16 January 2027.

2025
Leaves the Labour Party
He pledges to serve a single term if elected and, after a brief spell in the opposition coalition, formally leaves the Labour Party at Nike Lake in Enugu on the last day of the year.

Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress
After leaving the ADC in May, he is ratified unopposed as the NDC’s presidential candidate with Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate. The election is set for 16 January 2027.
